Christmas and New Year’s Eve are special times in Lisbon. The mild weather allows you to stroll through the illuminated streets and visit the various Christmas markets that have sprung up around the city.
The big Christmas tree stands on the Place du Commerce, also known as Terreiro do Paço.
A golden tree that attracts like a magnet.
In the streets of the Baixa, the lower town, which converge on the main square and the Tagus, angels seem to be suspended in the capital’s sky.
The lights of Chiado
In Chiado, it’s the Christmas bauble that’s causing a sensation. Installed in Camoens Square, it allows visitors to walk around and under the structure.
The scenario is totally Lisboan, with the tram 28 passing around the pretty Camoens square.

At the top of the Avenue of Freedom, the main thoroughfare between the Baixa and the Marquis de Pombal square, the magic of Christmas reaches families.
The merry-go-rounds, the Ferris wheel and the Christmas market shops have all taken their place in Eduard VII square.
As for the famous Marquis de Pombal square, its lights are shining to wish us a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2024.
Parties, shows, concerts: a wide variety
The end-of-year festivities are important for the people of Lisbon, who want to offer the best to the tourists who choose the capital to end the year in style.
December is full of shows and concerts. These include the Gospel Collective, on 15 December at the Pantheon. This is a free concert, but tickets (maximum 2 per person) must be collected at 7.30pm on the day itself.

Holiday traditions
Traditions are very much respected in Portugal, especially at Christmas, when family reunions are much appreciated.
The people of Lisbon travel to spend the “consoada”, or Christmas Eve, in their “lands”, the towns and villages of their origin.
It’s not easy to find something to eat in Lisbon on 24 December: shops and restaurants close.
