Espace Marvila 8, east of lisbon
Marvila 8, a leisure and shopping area
The Abel Pereira da Fonseca wine warehouses in Marvila are one of the icons of this district to the east of Lisbon.
The cellars cover 22,000 square metres. It’s an immense space that is now being reborn before its definitive transformation.
The old cellars, built in 1910, are destined to become a housing project.
But in the meantime, Marvila 8 is open to passers-by and visitors, offering a surprising variety of possibilities.
Marvila 8 has adapted and evolved into a post-industrial space that can rival the well-known Lx Factory to the west of the city.
The vast space of the Abel Ferreira da Fonseca warehouses is full of surprises.
There are shops, restaurants, theatres… and a much-appreciated friendly atmosphere.
The project has been entrusted to music producer José Ribeiro Pinto.
8 Marvila urban bohemian spirit
8 Marvila offers a whole range of shops housed in former wine tanks. The rough-and-ready decor, narrow alleyways and trendy range of shops make this a highly original space.
Some fifteen boutiques have been set up here. From the designer space to the art gallery, from the tattoo shop to the sound equipment, not forgetting, of course, the wine cellar. This wine cave features an original forged iron staircase.
One of the shops is occupied by the great-great-granddaughter of the founder, Abel Ferreira da Fonseca. A fine tribute to the ‘Armazens’.
8 Marvila also has 5 areas dedicated to catering. They are located in an open space that resembles a square.
Here you can enjoy a cocktail or a sparkling water. And eat at the vegetarian Mato restaurant.
Sofas, benches and green plants invite you to take a break. A delightful garden centre occupying the space at the back of the warehouses goes a long way towards creating a soft, tranquil atmosphere.
At www.lisbonne-affinités.com we particularly appreciated the relaxation area.
8 Marvila underground: festive spirit.
8 Marvila is not just a place to play padel, an urban sport if ever there was one, but also a place to have fun.
The architecture of the former wine cathedral can be seen in the side buildings of the warehouses.
The complex’s many spaces are immense. They’re still in their original state, but once they’ve been stripped of the tonnes of rubble, wood and other materials that have been piled up there over the years, they become party venues.
Themed nightclubs, concert halls and alternative venues bring the underground aspect of the site to life.
The complex seeks to respect 3 main principles: urban culture, community spirit and sustainability, as José Ribeiro Pinto, the venue’s manager, likes to say.
Several spaces can be hired for events such as photography sessions or showrooms.
Versatile, between tradition and modernity, 8 Marvila is the place to talk about.
