Colinas do Douro. A wine property to discover
Colinas do Douro, the Douro Hills. Wine lovers will appreciate the discovery of this new domain.
New it is since the 105 hectares of vines in Colinas do Douro were planted in 2010. It is therefore only very recently that the estate’s wines have been made available to consumers (2015 and 2016)
Colinas do Douro has the particularity of being located between two characteristic Douro terroirs. On one side the granite of the Beira Alta region and on the other side the Douro schist.
A specificity that can be found in the estate’s logo: a half golden, half silvery vine leaf.
This is a vineyard planted at an altitude of 640 metres, which gives Colinas do Douro wines an exceptional freshness. Quinta has also chosen to promote traditional grape varieties: Touriga national, Touriga Franca, Tinto cão, Tinta Roriz, Rabigato and Viosinho.
The estate is an assemblage of 4 quintas, 4 properties.
In the range of wines on offer there are 7 Colinas do Douro references. White, rosé, red and late picking. To which must be added 5 wines from the Quinta da Extrema range (the most distant estate). This is the estate’s top-of-the-range property, since it is the one that joins the two schist and granite terroirs.
The vineyard produces 300,000 bottles and aims to produce one million bottles from 2020.
Colinas do Douro launches mono grape varieties every year in order to test on the market the best possible combinations of grape varieties, soils and exposure.
To guarantee production the owner the Angolan businessman Kelson Giovelli has invested in a “adega” fully integrated into the landscape. The work was entrusted to the renowned architects, Eduardo Souto de Moura and Ricardo Rosa Santos. The two architectural goldsmiths have chosen to minimize the visual impact on this magnificent Douro landscape.
In lisbonne-affinités we appreciated the white Douro Supérieur 2018, a rather limited edition of 3500 bottles. Both fresh and concentrated, it is a wine from a particularly difficult year, and gives a special character to this superior Douro.
The red colinas do Douro, appellation contrôlée (DOC) reserva 2017 is also very elegant. A complex wine, the result of a blend of 5 grape varieties: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Roriz e Sousão. This wine spent 12 months in French oak barrels. Black fruits, heather and violets give this wine a rich and sensual aroma.
Also recommended is Quinta da Extrema, edição 1. A Douro controlled designation of origin, complex and refined.
Alcohol, of course, should be consumed in moderation. But these wines, which are new to the market, will seduce true lovers who want to discover the gustatory beauty of a region where Port wine is born.
